Apple Watch Ultra 3 Review: The Critics' Verdict

"Simply a powerhouse of a wearable," says TechRadar, while other critics praise its battery life and off-grid connectivity.
No single aggregate score — here's what the reviewers agree on, below.
The short version
Critics report that the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is Apple's strongest watch for outdoor use, with satellite communication, standard 5G, a larger display and the longest battery life in the range. PCMag recorded 63 hours with the always-on display enabled, while CNET found battery life exceeded Apple's estimate in its testing. The trade-off is clear: it is expensive, bulky and uses the same sensors as the previous model, so most everyday buyers will get better value from the Series 11.
What reviewers loved
- Satellite SOS, messaging and Find My support provide a way to communicate when cellular service is unavailable.
- PCMag measured 63 hours of mixed use with the always-on display enabled, enough to leave the charger behind for a weekend.
- The larger LTPO3 OLED display updates every second when dimmed and remains easier to view from wider angles.
- The titanium case, sapphire crystal, raised display edges and 100-meter water rating are built for demanding outdoor use.
- Fast charging reaches a claimed 80% in about 45 minutes, while 15 minutes of charging can provide roughly 12 hours of use.
What held it back
- At $799, it costs far more than the Series 11, which PCMag says offers the same sensors and lifestyle features for about half the price.
- The single 49mm case is bulky and may feel excessive for people who mainly wear a smartwatch indoors.
- It uses the same sensors as the previous model, limiting the appeal for Apple Watch Ultra 2 owners.
- Older Ultra watches receive many of the new health and fitness features, making an upgrade less urgent.
Buy it if you use an iPhone and want Apple's longest-lasting, most rugged watch with satellite communication for off-grid trips.
Skip it if you mainly want everyday health, fitness and notification features, because the Series 11 offers much of the same experience for substantially less.
What the reviewers say
Battery life is the clearest everyday advantage. Apple rates the Ultra 3 for 42 hours of normal use and 72 hours in Low Power Mode, but independent testing went further. PCMag logged 63 hours with the always-on display active during workouts, GPS use, messaging and sleep tracking. CNET also reported results above Apple's estimate. Reviewers therefore agree that this is the Apple Watch to choose when charging less often matters.
The more specialized upgrades are aimed at people who spend time beyond cellular coverage. TechRadar and PCMag highlight 5G and satellite connectivity, while Engadget points to satellite SOS, Find My, messaging, a siren and a depth gauge. Critics also like the larger, wide-angle display and rugged titanium construction. However, PCMag recommends the cheaper Series 11 for most people, and TechRadar warns that owners of older Ultra models receive many of the same software-led health and fitness features.
The competition
Apple Watch Series 11
The better fit for most buyers. PCMag says it provides the same sensors and lifestyle features for about half the price, although its tested battery life was shorter at 43 hours.
Apple Watch SE 3
The budget choice, starting at $249. It covers many core fitness and health features but lacks the Ultra 3's hypertension alerts, blood oxygen monitoring, rugged build and off-grid tools.
Should you buy it?
The Apple Watch Ultra 3 makes sense for outdoor enthusiasts, frequent travelers and anyone who values multi-day battery life and satellite communication enough to accept a large 49mm case and a $799 price. Its connectivity, durable construction and tested 63-hour runtime distinguish it from cheaper Apple Watches. It is a weaker upgrade for Ultra 2 owners, and the Series 11 remains the more sensible purchase for ordinary daily use.
